Nehru
Planetarium and Museum is located at the
former residence of late Jawaharlal Nehru,
first Prime Minister of India. He is the
best place to learn about the history of
the Independence Movement of India. The
museum offers photographs of Jawaharlal
Nehru in the different phases of his life.
The colonial building structure has high
ceilings, teak panels, verandas spacious
and well-maintained gardens. Before independence,
the building served as official residence
of the Commander-in-Chief of British forces
in India. Nehru has lived here for 16 years.
Also known as Teenmurti
Bhawan, today houses a museum, library and
a planetarium, which is dedicated to Nehru.
The museum staff here is actually the bedroom,
living room and study preserved exactly
as they were at the time of Nehru 's death.
They have a display of his accomplishments,
his childhood and youth. Gifts Gallery exhibits
some price gifts received by Nehru during
his trip to India and abroad, including
the Bharat Ratna medal was awarded to him
in 1955. The Jawahar Jyoti, the eternal
flame which is kept burning day and night,
symbolizes the ideals of Jawaharlal Nehru.
His first speech on the
eve of India's independence is inscribed
on a granite rock mass, set up in the front
lawn. The magnificent collection of the
library consists of books and materials
on religion, culture, sociology, economics,
politics and India's development. In addition
to books, you can also find brochures, newspapers,
periodicals, old and rare newspapers and
an excellent collection of manuscripts.
Nehru Planetarium tells you about the space
programme of India, the Universe and present
the Capsule which took Rakesh Sharma to
space. It shows astronomy are held every
day from 11:30 am to 3.00pm. The museum
is closed on Monday.
