Shah
Jahan, as its last architectural extravagance,
built one of the largest mosques in India,
the Jama Masjid. It is located in Old Delhi
Capital Region. Also known as Masjid-i Jahan-Numa,
it is the main mosque of the Emperor. Because
of its huge size, it took six years to be
fully completed. Located on a high platform,
the austere, yet beautiful, the building
was built of red sandstone, with a use of
white marble. The chair of Jama Masjid was
beautifully carved in a single block of
marble. It has three entrance gates, the
outbreak of the four towers and two minarets.

The door was once reserved
for the emperor. Broad stairways and arched
gateways greet visitors to the mosque. The
relics of the Prophet and the Koran are
inscribed here and his court can hold up
to 25000 worshippers at once. Designed by
Ustad Khalil, the great sculptor of his
time, it was built at a cost unbelievable.
However, the greatest treasure of the Jama
Masjid is undoubtedly the hair of the beard
Hazrat Mohammed, detained in the north-east
corner of white sanctuary. It also preserves
used his chappal (slippers), a chapter of
the Koran taken its holy book, the canopy
of his tombstone and the imprint of Muhammad
on the stone.
The main imam of the mosque
is the direct descendant of the original
and first imam appointed by Emperor Shah
Jahan. You can enter a mosque barefoot alone,
with his head covered and the port 'lungi
'(wear a traditional Muslim, offering worn
during prayers to the Lord). During his
reign, Emperor Shah Jahan built many other
mosques in Agra, Ajmer and Lahore. The large
building of Jama Masjid, has withstood the
test of time and get discouraged, about
recall the glory of the bygone era. Most
tourists who come to Delhi High make a point
to visit this magnificent building.
